What I Care About This Week

*In case you need background on the Boko Haram attacks….

…that reportedly killed 2,000 civilans. I certainly did. Read on The Root.

*This gets to the point I try to hammer into clients….

….one person’s perspective or use of social media does not speak for their entire generation. Read An Old Fogey’s Analysis of a Teenager’s View on Social Media

*NASA is a world leader in global warming research, but for how long?

*Trigger warning (rape and sexual harassment, stalking):

A YA author asked for sightly less than minimum wage…

…to write a sequel for her fans who wanted it, after the publisher passed on the book.
For daring to ask for money for her work (all $10 pledges received a copy of the book when finished) she received rape threats (which triggered memories of her own past rape) and was emailed photos of her home among other harassment.

Her response: “Jealousy rots and corrupts your creative soul and feeding your social media presence by hunting out controversy, feeding the flames, and then pretending you are simply fostering discussion is poisonous and empty. You create nothing but spite in a world that is already full of it and in desperate need of kindness.” Read her full response.

Outreach Nerd Broadcast updates

The past few months have been an experiment with G+ Broadcasts. Their purpose is to connect new audience with indie artists, but the same old methods of interviews aren’t doing the trick.

Imagine that. So I’m changing it up!

Out of all of the broadcasts I tried, here is what has survived – all in a slightly new form:

Outreach Nerd – TUESDAYSbuddha

1st Tuesday/month 7pmPT/10pmET: #SpaceNerd

All levels of expertise or newbies in one Hangout to catch up on Space News

2nd Tuesday/month, time TBA: #OutreachNerd

Useful Outreach tips & examples of people/orgs doing it right

3rd Tuesday/month, 10amPT/1pmET: #MediaNerds

Co-Hosts Etta Devine & Caroline Sharp join me to discuss how the media we consume affects individuals & society. Formerly the Bechdel Test Talks.

-4th Tuesday/month, time TBA: Outreach Nerd w/ Special Guest

Web Series Watch* & Live Streams – WEDNESDAYS

Upon request & monthly at East LA Rep’s By Appointment

*Be sure to follow this new series, which has its own site/channel. Co-hort Patty Jean Robinson & I dig deeply into the web series world & bring you our picks!

#FundingFridays – FRIDAYS

Guests will now include Fund-raising/Crowd-funding experts, paired with artists who’ve run successful campaigns.

Have a campaign to promote? You can join the Broadcast, ask your questions of the experts & plug your project at same time.

In-between, you’ll see new outreach-related works, but this is the new regular schedule.

A Day @NASASocial

Who thinks that driving out into the (literal) middle of nowhere to stare at antennae is a fun time?

800 people signed up to do just that for the NASA Social at Goldstone DSN (Deep Space Communications Network). 65 were chosen, and we all trekked from around the country to spend one day at this complex.

More blogging (and videos) soon, but here is a recap in image. In short: it was awesome.

WATCH me interview 2 other NASA Social attendees before our trip.

NASA Social to Goldstone [Outreach Nerd]

October 15th I’m attending the first NASA Social to Goldstone Deep Space Communications Complex in the Mojave Valley.

From the NASA site: Sixty-five of NASA’s social media followers will have a rare opportunity to tour the agency’s Goldstone Deep Space Communications Complex in California’s Mojave Desert during a NASA Social on Monday, Oct. 15, 2012.

Goldstone is one of three NASA Deep Space Network (DSN) complexes strategically placed around the world. The complex provides the ability to communicate with spacecraft not only in orbit around Earth, but also in the farther reaches of our solar system.

Leading up to the Social, organizers put all of the attendees in touch with each other, both formally and informally. Here is a sampling of those who will enjoy this adventure with me!

On the Hangout:

Bill Dunford is a writer and space blogger from Utah.  Since 2005, he has run the science education website called “Riding with Robots on the High Frontier”, which can be found at ridingwithrobots.org. This is his second NASA Social, after taking part in the event for the launch of the Mars Curiosity rover in November, 2011.
Amy Pille is a corporate defense attorney practicing in Charleston, SC. She is part of a coordinating counsel team that manages product liability litigation on Regional and Local levels. She is also an avid tech and social media enthusiast, with roots in amateur radio. In what little spare time she has, Amy enjoys sleeping and getting scolded soundly by Abigail, aka Princess Pretty Paws, in the wee hours of the morning. (Shaun, Husband Extraordinaire, often helps out with Abby…no really, our household is basically just a cat entourage…for one cat.)
